Raising money for Greyhound Rescue
Volunteers from Take Action Eastleigh spent the day in Colden Common at a fundraising dog show for the Greyhound Rescue.
The aim of the day was to provide somewhere fun for people to show off their dogs, whilst raising money and awareness for the rescue.
Our main job was to greet people as they arrived and make sure they had all the information they needed to enter their dogs into the show. As they were on the front gate, the volunteers got to see and meet all the different breeds of dogs and puppies as they arrived.
Throughout the afternoon, after a barbeque lunch, it was time for the young people to watch some of the classes in show.
They also helped to look after the greyhounds, regularly taking them for walks, whilst making sure they had plenty of water and shade from the sun!
Fundraising for Sophie's Appeal
On Saturday 22nd May, volunteers from Take Action spent their time helping at a fun day in Kings Copse Farm, Botley for Sophie's Appeal.
The purpose of the day was to provide activities and entertainment, whilst fundraising and promoting awareness for the appeal. There were many stalls, ranging from the tombola to "grow your own sunflower", along with a dance school showing their routines, fire engines, a barbeque and lots more.
The young people from Take Action were in charge of running some stalls for the day, including hook a duck, lucky dip, toys sales and selling the raffle tickets. It was a hot, busy day and we all enjoyed working on the different stalls - with hook a duck being a favourite. We managed to sell hundreds of raffle tickets, as well as plenty of toys.
Sport Relief ‘Hoopathon'
March saw Vinvolved volunteers taking part in an unusual fund raising task in aid of Sport Relief.
Along with 243 other people in a muddy Hoglands Park, we attempted to "hoola hoop" our way into the World Record books.
The record attempted was for 1000 people across the country to hoola hoop for two minutes at the same time.
Despite a good half hour practice before hand in our Sport Relief t-shirts with our giant red hoops, none of us could quite manage the 2 minutes
(I was out within 50 seconds, and recovering for another 5 minutes).
One volunteer, Tom, did manage to almost make it, but the pressure (and gravity) got the better of him and he was out 15 seconds before the end.
Muddy (from dropping the hoops so many times) and tired (from picking the hoops up so many times), with our free hoops, crisps and t shirts in hand, we all agreed that laughing at ourselves and each other was far more enjoyable than our typical Sunday lie-ins.
Money raised: £100, which will go towards helping people living incredibly tough lives both at home in the UK and across the world's poorest countries.
Recognising the achievements of young Portsmouth volunteers
On Tuesday 16th February, Portsmouth's vinvolved team honoured the achievements of the many young volunteers from the city with an Awards Evening and fundraiser gig at the Wedgewood Rooms in Southsea.
107 people passed through the doors into the venue to browse exhibitions of the voluntary work done this year including case studies, newspaper articles, magazine appearances and volunteer profiles.
Certificates were handed out to those volunteers who have achieved a vfifty, vimpact or thank you award and we heard directly from a couple of very successful young volunteers about what they’ve been involved in.
The crowd massively enjoyed local ska band, The White Coats who performed for us for free and the cupcakes which went very quickly! A massive thank you to Simon Littler who also performed for us, well done!
There was a variety of people in attendance from the young volunteers themselves and their guests, colleagues and staff of organizations who enlist the help of volunteers and other guests from the media.
Solent Youth Action supporting Macmillan Fundraisers!
On Sunday 25th October, Solent Youth Action volunteers from Portsmouth went down to the site of the Great South Run to support Macmillan Cancer Care in supporting the hundreds of people running to raise funds for them.
Kitted out in green Macmillan merchandise, banging inflatable bangers and wearing silly wigs, we all had a great day!
Now, we hope to continue supporting Macmillan in their Christmas initiative of gift wrapping peoples bought items for a donation to Macmillan.
We need a small team of friendly, approachable volunteers with present wrapping fingers at the ready to be based at a store in Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth on Thursday evenings throughout December.
One World Week Collection at Fareham College
One World Week celebrated its 30th anniversary last year.
What started in 1978, with a few individuals coming together to challenge themselves and others to think about their responsibilities and connections globally, has grown into a worldwide movement with over 11,000 people taking part.
One World Week encourages supporters to use the week as a focus to get together and to become involved in local events, and the theme this year is Hungry for One World.
Students at Fareham College decided to organise a collection of food items, toiletries and clothes for local charities.
Big bins were dotted around the college and by the end of the week, they were overflowing with donations, from tins of spaghetti and jeans to baby grows and face cream.
Helping at Weston Courts' Sheltered Housing Fun Day
Take Action Eastleigh Volunteers had a very busy time helping out at Weston Courts' Sheltered Housing Family Fun Day on Saturday 25th July.
Not only did the young people assist the elderly residents by getting their lunch and cups of tea for them, they also sold raffle tickets and called out the winning numbers for the draw.
As well as helping with all these tasks and providing some intergenerational interaction with the residents, we also took a Lucky Dip on behalf of Solent Youth Action for any children to have a go on during the event.
Raising money for The Blue Cross Shelter
A group of volunteers from Chamberlayne College for the Arts have been fundraising over the last few months to raise money for The Blue Cross.
They have run "guess the name of the tigers" and "guess the name of the dog" for younger children who won the large soft toys if they guess the correct name.
The volunteers also took part in a sponsored dog walk.
Overall, £89.20 was raised and the volunteers had a tour around The Blue Cross shelter when they donated this money.
Red Nose Day fundraising
Six Solent Youth Action volunteers from the Take Action Eastleigh Project dressed in Red on Tuesday 10th March in aid of Red Nose Day.
Their mission was to take a Red-themed trolley around the 1 Community building where Solent Youth Action's Eastleigh offices are housed amongst other organisations like, The Volunteer Centre, Carers Centre, and Home-Start to name a few.
The trolley contained delights such as cakes, drinks, fresh fruit, flowers and bubble bath!
The event ran for two hours and in this short space of time £45.64 was raised for Comic Relief!
Well done to all the volunteers who took part!
Beijing Bikes
Portsmouth volunteers took part in Beijing Bikes at the Mary Rose School.
Beijing Bikes was a huge fundraiser event to help raise money for specially adapted gym equipment for the young people of the disabilities school.
Eight SYA volunteers helped monitor and assist the school pupils in using all sorts of adapted sports equipment to try and cover the distance of 5070 mile, the distance between London and Beijing.
Three Portsmouth Football Club players came to support the day along side all our volunteers and helpers. The day was a massive success and we are still awaiting news on the amount raised.
The Mary Rose School is our chosen organisation who are benefiting from all funds raised from Portsmouth vinvolved team activities.
